A client’s collection of art and love for entertaining became the organizing elements for this two-story courtyard house. The garage was designed as part of a garden wall the first in a series of vertical planes that define the entry sequence. Front and rear courtyards provide natural light and create distances from which inhabitants and art can be seen. The first level is clad in charcoal grey manganese brick and is separated from the second level by a near-continuous datum of clerestory glass. Zinc cladding on the second level further emphasizes the separation, and the lightness of the panels suggests a floating effect.
