Lake Pontchartrain Boathouse
New Orleans, LA
This lakefront boathouse was gutted and re-designed as a loft to take advantage of views. Facing Lake Pontchartrain and backing up to a large marina, the boathouse is one in row of dozens on a narrow slip of land. A glass box, the bathroom, floats in the center of the space and separates the public living area and kitchen from the master bedroom. The existing sheetrock ceiling was removed to expose steel beams, tension rods and a corrugated roof. Two rows of skylights were added, and march through the space, emphasizing its depth while washing the white surfaces with natural light. The exterior of the boathouse was reconceived as the most basic form of a house and executed in white stucco and aluminum channels.
